After the Majordomo ValueApp is installed, use the directions below to create a mailing list with the MajordomoList ValueApp. MajordomoList doesn't "install" like the other ValueApps which move from the "Available ValueApps" column over to the "Installed ValueApps". Instead, each time you click on MajordomoList, it executes a script that walks you through the creation of a mailing list.
- Under the "Available ValueApps" column, click on "MajordomoList".
- Agree to the license.
-
Enter the following information:
Majordomo List Name - Enter a name for the mailing list. This name will effectively become an email on your domain.
NOTE: To prevent confusion, do not create a mailing list with the same name as an existing POP email account.
Majordomo List Description - Enter a description for the mailing list.
New Password - Enter a password between 6 - 8 characters long. Valid characters are only printable ASCII characters.
Retype Password - Re-enter the password exactly
Moderated List - If selected, all postings to the mail list will be bounced to the moderator for approval.
-
You can choose to enter the following information or leave the defaults.
Subscribe Policy - Select your subscribe policy.
One of three values: open, closed, auto; plus an optional modifier: '+confirm'.
Open - allows people to subscribe themselves to the list.
Auto - allows anybody to subscribe anybody to the list without maintainer approval. Closed - requires maintainer approval for all subscribe requests to the list.
Adding '+confirm', ie, 'open+confirm', will cause majordomo to send a reply back to the subscriber which includes an authentication number which must be sent back in with another subscribe command.
Unsubscribe Policy - Select your unsubscribe policy.
Idendical to the above.
- Click the "Next" button.
-
For each of the commands, select one of the following or leave the defaults.
Open - Enables anyone access to the command.
Closed - Completely disables the command.
List - Enables only distribution list members access to the command.
Get Access - Enables access to files.
Index Access - Enables access to file names associated with specific majordomo distribution list.
Info Access - Enables access to the distribution list description.
Intro Access - Enables access to the Majordomo help files.
Which Access - Enables access to queries on distribution list.
Who Access - Enables access to queries on distribution list.
NOTE: To help guard against spam you should specify CLOSED or LIST for Get Access and Who Access. If you specified OPEN or OPEN+CONFIRM as your subscription policy then CLOSED is the only way to prevent spam access to the list subscribers.
- Click the "Finish" button.
Congratulations, you've just created your first mailing list. From the above example, there is now an email list known as testlist@<yourdomain> which, for the moment, has no subscribers. For those who are curious, take a look at the following text files that now exist on your site:
/usr/local/majordomo/majordomo.aliases
/usr/local/majordomo/lists/testlist (this will be empty initially)
/usr/local/majordomo/lists/testlist.config
/usr/local/majordomo/lists/testlist.info
